The Evaluation Process
A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive process that involves integrating information about your history, current symptoms, and day-to-day functioning with data from objective cognitive tests. The goal is to get a complete picture of how your brain is currently working.
If we find areas of weakness that are outside the norm for someone of your age and background, we will work together to uncover the cause and design a personalized plan of next steps to improve your functioning and overall quality of life.
The Step-by-Step Journey
Preparation
The Goal: Gathering the pieces of the puzzle.
Before we meet, we ask that you complete your initial Intake Form and share any relevant medical records (such as prior neurological or neuropsychological testing, or brain imaging). This allows Dr. Wood to thoroughly review your history ahead of time, ensuring that we make the most of our face-to-face time together.
The Clinical Interview
The Goal: Building the foundation.
We begin with a 60-to-90 minute conversation to discuss your history, current concerns, and future goals. This is where we begin to understand your unique story to ensure the evaluation is tailored specifically to you. We strongly encourage you to bring a family member or care partner to this session, as “two heads are often better than one.”
Neuropsychological Testing
The Goal: Gathering objective data.
Because the brain is complex, we look at it from many angles to ensure no detail is missed. We will spend 3-4 hours engaging in a series of interactive tasks that look at different brain functions—like memory, attention, and problem-solving.
P.S. Don’t worry! We work entirely at your pace and take plenty of breaks.
The Roadmap (Report & Feedback)
The Goal: Finding your path forward.
Within 2 to 3 weeks of your testing, we will meet again to review the findings in plain, everyday English. You will receive a comprehensive report that doesn’t just list raw numbers, but provides a concrete plan for treatment and actionable strategies to improve your daily life. This appointment is another excellent opportunity to involve your family member or care partner so they can learn how best to support you in your next steps.
